The valley temperatures are warming up these days. Time to head to the hills and go into the wilderness for a weekend….wait…roads are still closed? Yep. That is right. Even with the temperatures getting up into the 90’s last weekend the roads are still closed due to snow.
Typically roads are closed till Memorial Day weekend (end of May), especially those by trailheads leading into the wilderness. Yes, sometimes the snow is all gone but the roads are still closed. Why? Debris, landslides, washouts, sink holes, and/or down trees from winter storms make the road unsafe for the public to use. It takes time to clear the roads and make it safe again.
Please be patient with the Forest Service and Parks as they do their best to get these roads open for all of us to use. Give a district office a call before heading out on a trip. It could save you a drive and possibly frustration if you were wanting to go tomorrow. In the meantime plan a trip, study the maps, and make an itinerary for you and others to have. Check out the “Preparation” section if you need help.
