Mountain Home and Balch Park Open…

Photo by California Department of Parks and Recreation

Mountain Home State Park and Balch Park roads are expected to be open on May 17th. This is great news for those wanting to enter into the western portion of the Golden Trout Wilderness. Entering into the wilderness usually starts at Shake Camp. Heading north about 2 miles users will leave the State Park and enter into the Sequoia National Forest’s Golden Trout Wilderness.

Entering the wilderness from the State Park side provides access to Summit Lake (7.4 miles), Twin Lakes (9 miles), Maggie Lakes (11 miles), and other locations. One will have to go through the National Park Service lands to access the three lakes mentioned, so make sure to read up on their rules. Permits for the Golden Trout Wilderness are free if you get them at the Western Divide Ranger District in Springville.
