Forest Service road 21S50, commonly known as the “North Road”, on the Western Divide Ranger District on the Sequoia National Forest will be open by the end of today. The North Road is one of the main ways to access the western portion of the Golden Trout Wilderness. However, the Lloyd Meadow Road allows for access into the western portion of the wilderness earlier and later in the year due to being at a lower elevation.
The North Road allows users can access the three higher elevation trailheads known as Summit, Clicks Creek, and Lewis Camp. The Summit Trail is the only trail that remains above 8,500 feet. The other two start high and descend in elevation down towards the Little Kern River. A lot of the sites day to week-long trips start at these trailheads!
Even though access to most of the trailheads are available by this weekend, there may still be snow drifts and potentially snow fields in higher elevations of the wilderness. Please plan accordingly and be safe. Most of all have fun!
