Forest Service Road 16S02 is open to Horeshoe Meadow. Users wanting to access the Inyo National Forest portion of the Golden Trout Wilderness can now do so. Horeshoe Meadow is located at about 10,000 feet elevation. There is a campground there too, but users are only allowed to stay one night (more info here). Horseshoe Meadow is a great starting point to acclimate for high elevation hiking/backpacking. Stay over night to help your body adjust if desired.
Several day hikes can be done from Horseshoe Meadow as well as up to week-long trips. If you are not sure what to do, check out some of the trip plans under the Inyo National Forest section. Make sure to grab a wilderness permit if you want to do more than just a day hike.
