High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew Opportunity

Near the Inyo National Forest side of the Golden Trout Wilderness there will be two volunteer opportunities. Teaming up with the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew, you’ll be able to restore miles of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). One trip is in August and the other is in September. Signing up is free and they provide the food! You just show up, bring camping gear, and have a good time making a differences for future hikers of the PCT. Information about these trips are below.
Monache Meadow Base Camp

Short Description: Monache Meadows Base Camp 4 x 4 friendly

Event Type: Vital Trail Maintenance (VTM) – Trip Type: Base Camp 4×4

Long Description: The goal of this project is to rehabilitate the 4-6 miles of The Pacific Creat Trail from the Swallow bridge to Cow Canyon. Please not the last 12 miles to our base camp is a 4-wheel drive road and is not recommended for passage cars ( Don’t try it ). We will have a plan to pick up and transport in anyone without a 4 X 4 auto. The Cabin has a shower. Volunteers are encouraged to come for the entire week as the trip in and out is very difficult and time consiuming.

Work Activities: This project will allow the public safe and unimpeded passage to the trail that start at or near each lake and lead away into the wilderness area and backcountry surrounding. The work will include contouring portions of the path, and building earthen water bars for erosion control, if needed. Materials such as dead brush may be dragged to the site to help break the visual line of the path. Trail reconstruction will consist of mainly hand work. This will include construction of stairs, rebuilding of the trail bed, construction of water bars, bucking of down trees, brushing of overgrown portions of the trail, and other standard trail construction needs dictated by the lay of the trail.
