Melting Away

One month later the snow is just about gone. Unless there is a wet, cold, big storm coming to the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains, it looks like it will be an early backpacking season into the Golden Trout Wilderness after all. As of this posting, snow can be found in shaded areas around Quaking Aspen Campground. The campground sits at 7,000 feet. Interested in the latest snow pack report? Check out the Department of Water Resources California Data Exchange Center.

An early season brings both good news and bad news. The good news is a longer outdoor backpacking season. More time to explore and create memories for 2013. The bad news is dryer conditions can lead to lower flows in streams and rivers. Camp fire restrictions could go into play again like last year. If they do, you can expect the announcement to be posted here on goldentroutwilderness.org.
