A Winter Camping and Backpacking Guide

Winter is here and the snow covered peaks have closed the other 3 season’s easier access to all of the trailheads into the Golden Trout Wilderness. Very few people are determined enough to visit the wilderness in winter, but for those who do thoroughly enjoy it. In fact “there is a peace about it” said a hiker who enjoys winter backpacking.

Are you planning on going camping or winter backpacking? You don’t need to be intimidated by the colder temps or snow covered landscape. Instead research and prepare for it just like you would if going backpacking for the first time. Study maps, research gear, do an over night trip and day hikes to tune in your winter skills. Below is a guide that can be of good use should you decided to give winter backpacking/camping a try this year. As for the wilderness, you’ll likely need to plan an additional couple of days to hike to and from the trailheads as the roads are closed.
