Wildfire Updates for July

Source: InciWeb

Firefighters have managed to contain or suppress eight out of the nine lightning caused fires discovered this week in the Western Divide Ranger District, Giant Sequoia National Monument and Sequoia National Forest.

Only the Crest Fire, located on the ridge south of Wishon Campground, cannot be contained because it is located on a rock face inaccessible by ground crews. This fire is burning in a single tree with minimal ground fire, and is not expected to grow unless burning material rolls down-slope. It will be monitored and immediate action will be taken if necessary.
The Jordan, Lookout, Cabin, and Castle Fires have been contained and will be patrolled until they can be declared out.

The Jacobsen, Giant, Clicks, and Parole Fires have been declared out.

A reconnaissance flight did not see additional fires when they flew over the District on Wednesday. Lightning caused fires can go undetected for days or weeks until forest materials dry enough to allow flames to spread.

Firefighters are no longer working around Jerkey Meadow Trailhead, backcountry travelers are welcome to utilize this trailhead as desired for access into the Golden Trout Wilderness.
