Although many reports are stating the Sierra Nevada mountains are above normal for snow pack conditions, this is not the case for the Kern River Basin. The Kern River Basin has 16 snow survey courses and only 1 has not reported in yet. For the 15 surveys completed, the Kern River Basin, which the Golden Trout Wilderness resides in the middle, is just about at normal February 1 conditions.
According to the State website, the Kern River Basin sits at 99% of normal for February 1 and 61% of normal for April 1. Overall the Sierra’s are at 117% of normal. This is still great news though as the Kern River Basin ended with 5% of normal last April (2015). Hopefully the series of storms California has been receiving continues. It will be nice to have the lakes full, streams flowing, and meadows remaining greener longer this year compared to last, yes?
